Sweet! What a great species Emily!
@emilyritter Thanks so much. Now for those Pine Grosbeaks to come a bit further south !
You might need to come up this way to see Pine Grosbeak Em
@firn Sure was Matt and back in October. Since then they have been sparse with just occasional feeder forays by a few at a time. The only stable irrupter has been RBNU.
Cool. As far as stable irruptions, they are always relative to time and space. We have a long way to go to see grosbeaks in the numbers seen since 80s, but this one is the biggest in a couple decades for sure. I know now of 7-8 locations in central NY that have flocks every day. Very cool. This probably the first time you've had them like this in more than 20 years?
Cool.. up gan

From Vermont so growing up was used to seeing boatloads of them year-round,Also Rose breasted. Now in North Carolina and have seen them once or twice in winter. We just had our 1st sighting of 4 males this year. They apparently have a large migration (irruption) this year. Enjoy- they are distinctive and beautiful.
We saw our 1st Grosbeak in our backyard! I have been photographing birds for years and this is a 1st time we have seen these. They loved the seeds on the Japanese Maple. I got a few quick pics thru the sliding glass doors and then poof they were gone. Thanks to my wife for spotting.
